Access via ADSL over 50% of market share
At the end of December existed in Portugal about 1.44 million of users with access to broadband Internet and mobile around 1.73 million fixed access to the Internet, of which approximately 1.63 million broadband, according advance the Anacom's data.
According to the same, broadband mobile presented the more intense pace of growth in 2007. The number of users rose 256 thousand in the 4 th quarter, which represents a growth rate of almost 22%, higher than that recorded in the previous quarter. The figures achieved in December 2007 represent a cumulative growth rate since January 2007 of about 88%.
At the same time, there has been growth increasing the number of users of broadband mobile assets that experienced an increase of 38% from 478 thousand to 659.8 thousand users. Against January, the growth is 137%.
Service fixed Internet access
Already the service fixed Internet access submitted a total number of clients to around 1, 73 million, which represents a growth of about 3.3% against the previous quarter and 9.2% against the same quarter.
The number of customers for access "dial-up" continued to decline, mainly as a result of migration of users to broadband. In the quarter, the number of customers has reached about 99 thousand, about 6 thousand less than in the previous quarter. Last year, these accesses decreased 36.5%.
Most customers of the service fixed access to the Internet using a broadband: this service customers represent about 94% of total customers. The number of customers of broadband services has reached about fixing 1.63 million, more that 61 thousand in the previous quarter. Customers fixed broadband grew 3.9% against the previous quarter and 14.2% against the same quarter.
ADSL with a higher quota
The main technology for Internet access in broadband is fixed, since late 2004, ADSL, which represents 61.9% of the total (about 1 million customers in the quarter under review). The cable modem is used by 37.2% of customers of broadband fixed (about 606 thousand customers).
As regards market shares of the entries in broadband fixed, the share of customers of the Group SL has been in 68.5%, 0.6 percentage points below the previous quarter and 2.3 percentage points below the observed value in the same quarter.
According to the same data, the expansion of the shares of the new providers of broadband fixed was mainly supported for unbundled local loops, reflecting the improving conditions of the tender offer Reference of Access to Local loop (ORALL).
In the quarter under review, about 48.5% of new customers fixed broadband joined the services of alternative providers.
At the end of the 4 th quarter of 2007, the penetration rate of Internet access at broadband located on the 15.4 per 100 inhabitants to access and fixed 13.6 per 100 inhabitants for mobile access.
In the case of fixed access this figure is 0.6 percentage points above the recorded in the previous quarter and about 1.9 percentage points above the record at the end of the same period. Regarding broadband mobile, the penetration rate grew by 2.4 points in the last quarter.
According to information provided by ECTA, the penetration in Portugal of service for Internet access at broadband fixed found itself at the end of the 3 rd quarter, below the EU15 average. The penetration of broadband in the EU15 was of 16.9 per 100 inhabitants, while in Australia the figure was of 14.8.
